Hi. Please excuse this self publicity post. Other than that, I thought it would be interesting to bring this subject to debate: Do you think street art is connected with photography? Personally I'd say the answer is yes, as I can think of at least 6 street artist whose work influence my photography.

Do you get inspiration when you use Flickr?

Well, I certainly do. One of the things I love about Flickr is the Explore button; you can press it whenever you want and you can click on every picture you want.

Love it!

How do you get your inspiration, I get it while using Flickr, listening to music and when I walk down the street.

I've started a project called "The Origin of Movement" The title is based on my favourite Muse album, which is called Origin of Symmetry made by the British Rockgroup Muse.

The project is my view on everything that moves. From lightatoms to people at the busstation; it's all moving.

Hey guys, I just thought it would be nice to make a post discussing the type of equipment we all used when we got into photography. Just comment below and we'll see how many people will post! For me, I started with a Sony Cybershot and then moved my way up to a Sony DSC-H20. It's still in the Cybershot line, but has more of the DSLR features, such as a manual mode and conversion lenses. Do some film as well with a Minolta Maxxum 5000.

You dont need the newest fastest lens to get great shots. This was shot with an old olympus lens on my nikon DSLR. Try the charity shops your loft or your family. I got this lens OM 65-200 f4 from family its not cheap 2nd hand but its free for me to use for a while. I shall miss it when I have to return it but it has given me some great shots. I also found a zenith at a car boot sale for £15 with 4 lenses and accessories. start the search!

I couldnt sleep so I wentout at 05.30 with my camera. I found this fly hovering along the track and took about 150 shots, with various lenses and extension tubes and having to move the flash as its placement on the bracket wasnt working with the extension tubes. It was quite an effort as it was hovering but kept moving up and down the track. It was quite hard choosing which one to use as there were so many. It was all worth the effort as I finally made explore!

I hate myself... really!

I can't make music, I can;t take pictures, I can't pass my exams because of 7/10 points, and I suck with being social.

And what can I?Saying things You'll never need,and I read about 4 years ago in the local newspaper...

But what can I do with my DSLR?

Barely nothing. The only things I like are taking pictures of Concerts and taking pictures of myself.

The story behind (2)

...The time has come. So, for the (few) curious of you out there, I'll be delighted to tell you what was the (not so big) deal. Actually, the real story was kind of funny and kind of ordinary that you wouldn't believe it, but it's the best way to make things happen.

So now, I've been told the friends in the photo are such a cute couple, the nice mood of the photo itself and the nice lighting it has. But believe me, it's all about the moment. I know it's not a Pulitzer winner but it has a "thing", some magic in it. Again, the moment. So here is the ugly truth:

They are not even each other's type, just friends. They were sitting there, just checking how much cash could we put together in order to buy some water, because of the damnnn hot weather. He was holding some coins in the hand you can't see, and she was laughing because of the "poor mode on" day we were having.

I was sitting with a third friend out of the frame, so when I just saw the whole scene, without saying a word, stood up and silently took the photo. And, that's it.

So, now that you know the truth, I'd like to make clear one point. I wouldn't like to enter that debate about telling-the-story-just-kills-the-magic thing; I told it because I wanted, so it's up to you consider if the magic is still there (or if it has left, or if it's stronger than ever...). Other than that, I insist, the shooting moment is crucial: I think that's the magic, getting something new from those ordinary moments. (the speech's end is near, I promise) Nothing new, but it's something some of us tend to forget, so let's keep it in mind.

Lens Flares?

Hey there guys! This is just a topic I thought I would post having to due with lens flares...i can't do them. I just wanted to know if anyone has found a nice shutter speed to get a really nice lens flare. This is a recent photo I took that I'm not happy with the lens flare:

I just don't like how it kind of floods out the whole image.

I recently read on one photo that, to get the effect he did, he burnt his negatives on that roll of film. My question is, has anyone into film photography ever done this? And how did it come out?

No photoshop used in this photo.A 10 sec exposure at F22 with a flash at 1/16 power with a pringle tube snoot below the face. I fired the flash 4 times moving each time I fired it. Possibly should of alterd the power each time to keep the light a bit more even. However I do quite like the way it fades.

So, I'm not gonna lie, I love Flickr. I spend way too many hours on it. Zack Ahern is a seriously rad photographer, and I found him through Flickr, and he introduced me (through a link on his profile--yes I'm a creeper) to Strobist.

So my question is, has any one of y'all tried strobes, or external flashes? I am wanting to get myself some Strobist gear (not official Canon of course--sorry but I don't have a spare few hundred bucks for a single flash). Please tell us about your experience if you have. :)

Film Photography

It is such a sad world that we live in, in which the great art of film photography and the use of darkrooms is going down the drain. Getting exposed (no pun intended) to film photography is an excellent way to expand your skills in photography. With all these new programs such as photoshop, young adults are just taking pictures and throwing around a little editing magic to make a work of art.

Music vs. Photography

Music plays a huge role in my life, and it has affected my photography as well. By music I don't mean the music played during the take of a picture, but the music listened to around the time.

A year ago, my musical tastes were so distinct that if I were to listen to the style I listen to now, I would have been upset last year to know this is what I've come too haha

I started listening to the indie/alternative genre this year, and not only has it changed the the perspectives and styles in which I take pictures, but it has added a certain uniqueness.

As time goes on and the music I listen to change, I'm positive so will my photography.

But for the moment, I'm greatly influenced by these guys: Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Morning Benders, and the xx

Levitations

Hello hello hello all!

Sooo, recently I've figured out how to make levitation shots... Have any of you done that? It's a looot of fun. So if you don't know how to do it, I'll explain it to you.

First of all you'll need a chair or a stool type thing. That's what you'll be sitting or lying on. If you want to look like you're lying down, you'll have to either use to chairs/stools or balance on one. Then when you've taken the photo, you go on Photoshop or Picnik to edit out the chair/stool. I use Picnik, so I'll explain it with that... You upload the picture on Picnik.com and go on the Touch Up section of the Create section. You then use the Clone tool to "erase" the chair/stool. And ta da, your levitation shot is complete. Now you can continue editing the photo however you want to...

Sooo. I don't know if any of my fellow photographers here use DeviantArt or Firefox, but as I stumbled upon the internet today, I experienced the most superb art browsing to ever have experienced before. DeviantArt's version seven has made it so that you can see multiple pieces of art at the bottom of the page you are already on. You can browse through the gallery you are in by clicking the arrow keys, whereas before you had to go back to the gallery and click on another link, so on and so forth.

Upon discovering the new DeviantArt, I found out that Firefox has a new full screen mode. This makes it so the internet is your whole screen and the bar at the top is hidden away unless you scroll near it.

Art has never looked so good. :]

Yep, that's me! XD I'm sorry to hit you all with another introduction but I feel like I do need to introduce myself. :) I look forward to diving into "real" posts!

My name is Gabrielle, and I'm a French-Canadian sixteen-year-old from Montreal. I'm homeschooled online using Keystone National High School, which is positively awesome. I have two younger siblings, and my family and I travel a lot. We split our months between the Laurentians in Canada (as if anyone's heard of THAT), Orlando FL and the Bahamas, plus our other travels. :) I always feel a little uncomfortable telling new people but it's really a basic part of my life. Trust me, I'm a very simple gal. :) In fact, I am still trying to pick up my bootstraps and buy a Canon XSi... Yikes.

So, gear. I use a Canon Powershot SX20 IS, which is technically a point-and-shoot on steroids, also known as a superzoom. Not gonna lie, I do take great pleasure in showing off my 20x zoom.

Still, I have been feeling the limitations of my camera lately and that's why I want to get the XSi. For example, I have a very very hard time getting a shallow dof with my superzoom and it doesn't support remotes either--which doesn't seem like a big deal, but when you're doing a 365 you're bound to do self-portraits even if it's not self-portrait-exclusive. There are a bunch of other reasons why I want a DSLR, of course.

So if any of you have any thoughts or advice on the XSi or many on another SLR I should buy, let me know. :)

I love reading, always have. That is probably my first passion, but I really enjoy photography and it would be absolutely amazing if I could do it freelance someday. (In the FUTURE! Haha, still need to learn a lot...)

One of my favorite things to do is go to Disney World or Universal Orlando, even if just to walk around the park and enjoy.

I speak three languages! French and English fluently, and I'm studying Spanish in school.

Where is your Focus?

I'm a portraits kind of gal. I love taking pictures of children and families, and my beautiful friends that I make pose for me. I'd also be lying if I said I don't get a kick out of taking self-portraits. It's easy to be goofy or serious (whichever the situation requires) when there's no one watching!

Well, where to start? My name is Tayler, I'm 16 years old and I live in the very corner of the united states, in good ol' Vancouver Washington. I'm not sure what my first camera was so I'll just tell you that I currently own a Fujifilm finepix s-1500. I try my best to make time for photoshoots but school is a life-sucker. however, when I do get the chance, I try my best for some magic. I don't know how I got into photography... Probably ljust like the girl talked about below me, from holding a little digital camera high up in the air and smiling from below, and the occasional flash-filled mirror shot, but that I quickly grew out of and started to dig deeper into ACTUALL photography, especially once I entered High school. Now that I'm ending my sophomore year, things about my future are really comming into perspective, and my dream job I've decided would be to become a national geographic photographer, because I love nature photos, and traveling is a secret desire of mine.

I know I have time to set up my future, but it really is going by fast, and I will document it with as many photos as possible. :)

Well hello. That is me, if you hadn't assumed as much. I happen to be fifteen, and currently experiencing everything being bigger in Texas, which is a weird way of me saying I live there. Pictures, to me, are rather about feeling than specific settings and numbers. But then again, I'm amateur to say the least.

I'm slighly embarrassed by my first experiences with photography. During the awkward years of middle school classified by girls trying to be cool through wearing unflattering lip gloss and too-big-but-name-brand graphic tees, my shiny pink digital camera never left my wrist when going to an outing with friends. The pictures were uploaded by the hundreds, the composition being me and one other, possibly two, making stupid faces with the only creativity involved in the angle (which was always straight above my head, pointed down with our faces turned towards it). When I was feeling outgoing, I'd turn to the camera solo, locking myself in the bathroom and turning out a mirror pic where the flash covers half of the picture, and another quarter taken up by dirty spots on the mirror. For years these were my photography skills. To me, having fun with friends was taking pictures looking like I was having fun with friends. As it was for all of us in those years.

Needless to say, those days are overcome, thankfully.
And what I am now, well, I suppose you're on your own for that story.

Zuiko on Nikon

I was lucky enough to get an olympus OM20 and 2 lenses. The lenses are good and I wanted to use them on my nikon. I finally found a way. Cheap extension tubes that thread together I got a nikon set and a 4/3 set which can thread together. Then a 4/3 to OM converter. Now I can use old OM lenses on my nikon dslr. Here is an example I rather like the bokeh.

So, let's introduce myself.
I'm Maarten, 16 years old and I live in The Netherlands.
I began starting with photography at a very young age (I was 5 or 6 when I held a camera for the first time.) My first camera was a little red analog camera which leaked light, so the pictures were a bit strange, sometimes ;) My first real camera was a analog Canon Prima BF-8. Just a point and shoot, but I liked it very much. After 3 years, something went wrong with it and it had to be repaired, but that wasn't possible.

After a few years without a camera, I started to save money for my first digital camera. After having doubts between a Märklin train set or a digital camera, I bought the Sony Cybershot DSC-S500. What a bad camera! Noisy in both ways (shutter&ISO way) and not that good.

The DSLR feeling started when I could borrow a Olympus E-420 from a friend of mine. We went downtown, he with a Olympus E3, and me wuth the E420. I didn't have a clou what I was doing,but I liked it very very much. A few days later, my mother past away, which happened Febuary 2009. My whole life started to turn around, but when it was my birthday (may), it all began to change. Still, I was thinking of my first DSLR, I was thinking of 2 cameras: The Nikon D60 or the Canon EOS 1000D/Rebel XS. The thing was, it stood there , in some paper, but I didn't know what brand, or type, or whatsoever. WHen I opened it, I first saw "Canon" I thought: "Whoopie!"(I don't know why, but I thought it was going to be a Sony, and after my first Sony experience, I didn't want a Sony anymore). Then I saw it was the 1000D/Rebel XS, which made me very happy.

About, a year later, I made about 15,000 pictures with it, who all are very different. Pictures of flowers, of Eindhoven, of a very nice classmate ;), of Barcelona, of parties, of concerts, and I love it.

I hope I can grow in Photography, and learn much here!

Let's see if encluding a picture goes the same way as normal ;)

Adventures

While visiting family I always try and go on a mission with my camera. I find it inspiring being somewhere different and not going to the same local locations. I have found some really cool locations outside the town they where they live. Theres quite a lot of wildlife but my best finds were a substation and a what I thought was a disused railway track with tunnels.
It turns out its actually a test track and does get used from time to time.

When I found the substation my camera was set to ISO 1600 I have a d50 so this is slightly noisey. I never checked it so it wasnt until I returned home to find the slightly noisey images. Unimpressed as I really liked a some of the shots I had taken. Then the idea came converting to B&W. Afterall grainy noise and B&W go hand in hand. A brilliant idea I cant imagine them in colour now.

Tips, tricks, techniques!

Hello all. Firstly, thanks to Jayden Dave and the TeamSixteen Family. I am humbled and proud to consider myself a newly acquired distant cousin of sorts. I'm a photographer among many other things living in Portland, OR. I see photography as a passion that happens to pay me from time to time as opposed to a profession that I enjoy.

I had started my own blog, a few months ago, primarily to provide others with tips and tricks that I have developed into my own photographic workflow. From photoshop techniques to lighting set ups, I try to approach it from a technical, but accessible angle. Some tutorials, reviews, software walkthroughs and the like, all done to try and pay back the internet which I have used for so much of my own education. It has grown into its own through a few review articles which have pushed me into a variety of places from various websites to the New York Times. Mainly luck with a bit of tireless self promotion and trying to pay attention to how best to network with others and use various free outlets available. Hopefully I can continue to help others in the same vein that I've so greatly benefited from.

Saying that, here is a snippit from my most recent blog post. Through a conversation on a GF1 specific photography forum, someone had purchased a photoshop action (for around $35 I think) which seemed to me to be one that I could more or less figure out as it seemed to be doing something similar to an action that I had recorded for myself. After a little searching around, I found a nice balance between both a local and global contrast as well as sharpening to create a strong effect for most any image.

The basic idea comes out in two parts, first using an 'unsharp mask' layer to help boost local contrast throughout the image. I borrowed this particular 'unsharp mask' technique from another blogger named George from phototouchup.net as I'd never thought to use unsharp mask like this. Secondly, on top of that layer, I combine a 'smart sharpen' layer which then has a strong 'high pass filter' blended to overlay applied on top of it creating a sharpened and globally contrasted layer resulting in deep contrast both between highlight and shadow as well as color creating a punch. Without entirely reiterating the process, if interested it lives on my blog under "Free Photoshop Pop Action" and I hope that it can help others. It has been useful for me and now, including George's local contrast, has even further progressed the overall effectiveness. I'd be curious to see how well it works for others. I have a flickr group here and would love to combine it with a team16 approach. Please feel free to join up and promote your own blog, website or others that you find useful. It is in its early development stages, but I would like to see it grow as a good resource for all things (legally) free and provide those of us looking to network, the means.

Resa's Great Idea to Post our Explored Photos

Here are my shots that made it to Explore. It is fascinating to me that the largest value of interestingness comes from the camera you used and not the content you shot. I have a Nikon D40 and a Sigma DP1. I've had 10 photos on Explore thus far out of which 7 were taken with the Sigma DP1. I've taken dozens of others with the Nikon D40 that are of similar content quality or better but don't make it to Explore. I am almost certain that part of the algorithm for Explore has to do with the camera you used (40%) + comments (15%) + faves (15%) + views (20%)... or something like that. All I am saying is that if you have a good eye, it shouldn't matter what camera you used.

Introduction - Rachel Celeste

Hey! My name is Rachel and I am a twenty-five gal from Canada, working full time while simulatenously taking courses through distance ed. Most of the spare time that I have left is spent taking photographs. Back in December of 2009 I started my first 365days self-portrait adventure and I'm highly considering attempting the 100 strangers project as well.

I shoot with a Canon 50D that I bought in July of 2009. You can see most of my photography on my flickr. A lot of my inspiration comes from everyday life, poetry and the wonderful people I surround myself with.

Like Aia I am also joining this community because I was asked to share some tips and advice about photography, and like most of us here (all of us?!) I am not a professional by any means! Photography is all about learning and experimenting so I am looking forward to what will come out of TeamSixteen.

D80 HDR/Fisheye lenses?

Okay, so I really don't understand how to do this completely since i don't know what VT and some things are on my camera, and I have been wanting to try aHDR photo for the longest time! Can someone explain it to me like you would a baby?

Ohh, were can i find a good/cheap fisheye lens to fit a D80? Can I pop my Diana f+ on it or do i sound crazy?

Photographers Block

My name is Resa. I am an eighteen year old photographer with dreams as abundant as the stars. I live in Northern Illinois and work at a donut shop (though I despise donuts with a passion). I am deeply in love with a fro-haired cutie [032308-forever <3].

I decided I wanted to be a photographer at the age of six while accompanying my sister while she worked on a school project. I followed her around in the woods and pointed out things I wanted her to take photos of, and it was then that I decided photography was my calling.

I went from using mom's film camera (and leaving her with a bajillion rolls to develop) to dad's not-so-great digital camera to another not-so-great 3mp digital camera I received as a gift.
Finally I saved up some money and purchased a Digital Rebel XT, which I named Magritte after my favorite artist, Rene Magritte. It's pretty out of date now, but it was top of the line when I got it. :p My abilities didn't really progress much until I got Magritte, and since then people seem to be slightly interested in my art for some reason. :p

I have won first place in the Triton College Photography Contest twice and second place once.
I have also won runner up in the USA Network Character's Welcome Contest.
Received press passes for both Mushroomhead and Dope, two bands I enjoy quite a bit.

annnnd. I think that is more than enough for now, I ramble a bit.

Sooo... I don't exactly know what exactly we're s'posed to do.... err, I mean post. So I just thought, what about a discussion? So here it is.

What do you think of nudity in photography?

What I personally think, and this is just my opinion, is that it makes me uncomfortable to look at, and frankly I don't like it. I think Just maybe a bare back is okay, as long as it's not, like, slutty or too revealing or stuff... That doesn't mean I think it's okay, I just don't mind it as much. The thing I don't like is full-blown, take off yer knickers sort of nudity. Even just showing of a butt is just like, eww, don't wanna see your private details! Now, I'm not trying to offend anyone or something. This is a discussion. Those are just my thoughts.

hello all. my name is aia, and i'm not going to release my age on this site, because, for the most part, i could be your mother ;D i do have four children, ages 14, 12, 11 & 5. i live in alberta, canada.

i am joining this community because i have been asked to share some tips & advice on photography. on that note, i am not a professional, just an amature that has been capturing life for about 18 years, 6 of those years being digital. i am constantly learning, too, and am striving to be open to new ideas. i own a canon powershot SE is & a pentax MZ-7 (film, but the shutter is on its last wheezing breath), so my canon serves me well these days. my dream is to own something a bit fancier, but for now i am living in the moment. my inspiration for photography is daily life, my kids & other artists on flickr, which is probably one of the best photosharing sites out there. you can check out my stream at http://www.flickr.com/photos/aclamp/

Hey there !

I'm Andrew, although i use Purpleaye as my online name.

I'm a 14 year old freshman, studying in a American school in Shanghai.

My passion for photography began when i made my first purchase of a Canon 7D, from there on, i started learning about the basics, then on to more advanced material.

I'm a huge fan of HDR and landscape photography, i think that my best work consists of those two categories.

Hey, I'm Lexie rain, call me Lexie(: I guess I am now the youngest so far, I am 13 years old as of January 13. I have always had a passion for photography, didn't really start till I was 12. I am no photographer, I am just an amateur learning, I believe my work is progressing. I feel the same way as Tori, I some times get frustrated that I just cant be as amazing as someone, but what I have learned is to just look at those photos and use them to motivate me.

I am the most scatterbrained person you will ever meet(: I at the moment hold a Nikon D80 & Diana F+ in my hands, looking forward to upgrading soon. I don't have a blog. One of the things I say to myself when I'm looking at the photos I have taken is: Art is art, whatever art may be, it is beautiful.

Haha, Tori, I just read your post about being the young one :) Sorry to disappoint, but I'm younger with my 14 years :)
Sooo, I'm Melanie, and I'm from the Great White North :) (meaning the wild, cold Canada)
I've been "into" photography since Grade 6 (that's what, 2 years ago?) And I'd love to say that I love every minute of it, but sometimes I'm just so frustrated! Why can't I be as talented as ______ over there... haha. I try my best, and I've got to admit I've gotten better.
About me.... hmmm. I'm tall, "smart" (in today's world often seen as a Nerd) I have medium long hair that literally comes in all shades of almost anything except for light-blond, black, white, and gray. Umm, I have an adorable bunny named Max Thumper Helium :) Insiderrrr haha. Maybe some day I'll tell ya'll how he got his name :)
I also have two fish, Tigger and Keckles, and I used to have 1/6 of a hamster, Tweaky Caramel Esau Parrott, until she died a few weeks ago :(
Oh, and I like decorating and reading and art. A lot.
Also oh, I am originally from Germany, have lived in the States when I was little, been to Equador, Sweden, and the Netherlands. And I've got to set some things straight.
1. Hitler was not German. He was Austrian. Duh.
2. Basshunter is also not German. He's Swedish. Dur.
3. I'm Mennonite (only ancestor-like, not actually really) and therefore NOT really German. I just grew up there. Mennonites are Dutch.

I wrote a lot. Sorry.
Oh, and sometimes Je suis bête. Yes, you can google that.
Aaaand, I'm a child of God, and no, I'm not trying to preach at ya or convert ya (that would be nice, though) Just sayin.

Dude. Dude. Duuuuuuuudddde. I'm the young one. No, I'm not a male. Just because I use the term "dude" sometimes doesn't mean that I am one.

My real name is actually Tori, for those of you wondering-ish. I'm fifteen and got my hands on my Canon Powershot S5 a month, actually in April (This month), after my thirteenth birthday. I've been with photography for around two years and have loved most of my time with photography. Photography has irritated me and sometimes has made me want to just throw my camera on the ground and scream, thankfully I'm sane enough to not do that. The camera I use now is a Canon T1i, WUT NAO. ;D I don't have an interesting story on how I got into photography though. :(

I'm Ellen. I've had a passion for photography for a few years now and could barely hold back tears when my parents surprised me with a Nikon D3000 three months ago.

As a young, aspiring photographer, I always feel undermined when I see people with such surreal talent. I'm working on letting it intimidate me less and instead using the beautiful shots as motivation for me to get out and learn how to capture mind-blowing photos.

My favorite subjects in pictures are people. There is nothing I love more than taking a beautiful person, and capturing a beautiful picture of him or her. That's probably why my "models" are usually my best friends.

I guess I can post a photo. I'm aware that it's really nerdy.

I am Dimitri and I am from Greece. I study Urban Design at a college in the US and I am about to finish my first degree... in just 3 weeks... OMG!!! I have to work and do grown-up stuff. Life, I think they call it.

It has been only recently that I was introduced to photography. I see photography as a refuge and an escape from work. I also see it as an opportunity to experiment. And I experiment a lot with it. I am totally amateur in this and certainly not an expert. I have only held a camera for about 2 years time. Almost all of my photos possess extremely different tones and post-processing work, as well as very different subjects. I strive for difference. I use an entry level DSLR \\ Nikon D40 and one-of-a-kind compact DSLR \\ Sigma DP1. Between the two I love the Sigma DP1.

I recently started blogging (like 5 days ago). I never understood the fascination of Tumblr until I got an account 6 days ago. :)

My only wish is to own a Leica one day... :)

Hi, I just became a member, so we thought it'd be nice if I shared a few introduction with you.

I'm a 20 years old girl, from and currently living in Venezuela. I moved into photography by late 2008; and haven't stopped ever since. The way is still long though ;)
And yes, I've got a blog.

I think the most captivating thing about photography is that feeling you get, that you are preserving a moment. There is something magical (or very close) when you feel you've caught that instant. That, when you take THE photo. The one which tells the whole story. And this is the first photo I'm sharing with you.

PS. Next time, I promise I'll tell you this story. Or some other.
